Our
History
The Technical University of Ambato introduced the teaching of English as a foreign language in 1969, initially in the Faculty of Administration and Management. Over the years, the interest and importance of the language grew, leading to the creation of a Speech and Language Laboratory in 1975-1976. In 1979, the teaching of English was decentralized, establishing the "Department of Languages of the Faculty of Administrative Sciences."
In 1987, a project to decentralize language teaching in all faculties was initiated. In 1992, the "Centralized Department of Languages" was created, consolidating the human and physical resources of language teaching at UTA. Although centralized, teachers continued working in different faculties.
In 1999-2000, a building was designated for the "Specialized Department of Languages," which soon expanded and offered teaching of Portuguese, German, and Italian. The Open Courses, initiated as project for the community, which also grew significantly. And in 2013, with the approval of the Statute, the department changed its name to the "Language Center."
In 2014, the Center inaugurated a new building on the Huachi Campus, and in 2015, the Open Courses expanded to the Continuing Education Building. Currently, the Language Center offers the UTA Courses, Open Courses, Teens Program, and Kids Program. The languages that are taught are English, French, and Italian. The Center has become a benchmark in language teaching, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the central region of the country.
